After twenty hours of gameplay, I can honestly say that I have found a game that is better than Final Fantasy Tactics
or any Fire Emblem
title! The title of this game is: Agarest Generations of War!
In Agarest: Generations of War
, players start their journey
out by controlling a very weak general, “Golden Leo”, who immediately gets killed by the Darkest God in the game because he decided it was more morally correct to save an elf from massive death than to kill her! This whole story thus starts the journey of the First Generation!
After your character dies during the very first battle, a female Light Goddess appears and grants Golden Leo life again in return for becoming a vessel. As these two characters journey on throughout the story, they come across many people that have their own endeavors. Some characters in the game want to join forces with you because their town was destroyed and others want to just destroy the evil in the world.
As time goes on and you start building a huge group of party members, Golden Leo finds himself being hit on by a few females in the group. During different parts of the story line, the females tend to ask who is more beautiful or who is stronger and you actually have to answer and make a decision. These decisions throughout the game control which of the girls you will marry! And yes, you better be careful because the other girls do start to resent you!
But either way, by the end of each generation, your decisions on who to marry, based off the answers to the female’s questions, actually result in what kind of powers the next generation of people start with. I can’t really tell you what all of the different power are that you can have because I have not replayed through this game more than once but what I can tell you is that it really does matter! So if I were you, I would choose your wife carefully!
But enough with the story line! Let’s get into the gameplay features. The reason I find this game better than Final Fantasy Tactics and all of the Fire Emblem titles is how the battles work. First of all, characters reach each separate area from walking to one orange circle to the next! Each orange circle on the map represents different cities or areas in your journey that you have not been too yet. Some areas are strictly just fights, some are just story lines, and others are massive amounts of battles in a row where you can’t automatically bring your characters back to life from the Camp Menu!
After you decide to click on the orange circle to go into a specific area, your character enters into a battle arena. The first thing that happens is that your characters appear on the battlefield in the exact set up that you put them in the Camp Menu. After your players appear, the enemies appear! Thus starts the battle.
The battle is two phases: Move Phase and Attack Phase. In the Move Phase, you get to control where each character moves on the battlefield as long as it is in there range of movement! Of course this may seem easy to do but to be truthful about the whole situation, placing your characters in the right spot is actually the most important part of the phase. Take a look at my video below as too why it is so important!
After you place your characters all in the correct spot; the move phase ends. Thus starts the attack phase. At the top of the screen is the order in which your characters and enemies take turns to attack. Of course, if you watched the video above, you would know that if you move your characters to the right positions to link them up, you can actually combo against your enemies and completely obliterate them! But be careful, enemies can link up with each other and do the same exact thing!
So when you finally defeat the enemies, if you can actually beat them, anyone who is still alive in the party will acquire experience points! Eventually your characters will level up and gain a certain amount of points in which you can use to upgrade their stats. The stats you can upgrade are Strength, Vitality, Agility, Intelligence, and Luck! And once again, the way you upgrade your character, will greatly affect how you fight on the battlefield. The more you upgrade your character in Intelligence, the more Will Power skills he/she will acquire. The more you upgrade your character in Strength, the more Attacks you will acquire.
So the only thing I can tell you is this, Agarest Generations of War is the best JRPG on the market today! It offers a ton of adventure, intense story lines, and fighting that total up to be more than 100 hours of gameplay. And the best thing about it is that you control all parts of the characters development and even each generation of powers! What more can you ask for in a game? Nothing! Agarest has everything.
So without further ado, I give Agarest Generations of War, developed by Ghostlight, a 9.5/10 rating with two thumbs up. This is one game that every gamer should own!
