Awesomely enough, Aldorlea Games
was able to create an epic Turn Based Strategy RPG called The Book Of Legends that took me back in time to the old Final Fantasy
days on the NES! In this game, players take on the role of a super fighter, Jordan, who is tasked with right away of putting a sleeping potion on the largest demon in the world, Azutura. When Jordan arrives to this area, he finds that the potion has an outcome that he was not expecting which ultimately releases more demons out into the world.
When I first started playing this game, I was completely lost. There was so many places to go in this game, but there was no mini map, so I was constantly back tracking myself. But like the professional gamer I am, I took the time to learn the maps myself and was able to instantly find my way places. On the quest of fighting demons around the world, I found myself having some epic abilities that I was not expecting to have. One of which gave me the ability to talk to animals.
In this first area of this game, I walked up to a chicken that was just wandering in the woods and lo and behold, it talked to me! And after a quick conversation, the chicken decided that he wanted to fight along side with me. Wierd, right? Of course, who doesn't want a chicken to help out, especially when you are all by yourself. As I continued my adventure, I wound up finding a camp site that looked to be used, so what did I do? I slept there!
Again, here was a twist I was not expecting right away. As soon as I fell asleep, I manged to get mugged by a group of thieves who stole my potion. Even though I was able to kill every single one of them, I lost the potion. This lead me to take on my first real quest of the game, to get back my potion. As I journeyed through the woods, completely lost by the way, I manged to come across a Thieves Hideout where I completely obliterated everyone inside except one 16 Year old Girl, or was she 21? The game wasn't too specific on that point!
As the game progresses, you find yourself encountering many people that want to join your party: Queens, Fighters, Regular People, Thieves, and of course Animals. Though it gets really tricky because at certain points of the game, the story line forces you to choose between some of your party members. For example, when I approached the Queen of the first town, she asked me to give up that 16 year old girl in place of her! How dare she! It is kinda hard to tell who has what powers, especially when the game never tells you. Other times, you will approach random barrels and find people inside that are destined to fight by your side just because you found them.
Like many other RPG's, characters in your party level up whether they are fighting or not. Thankfully enough, this allows you to swap out your characters at any time in the party just incase you don't want a man with a basket on his head to help you fight anymore. As members of the party level up, some acquire new skills while others acquire more damage and health. The one thing that I found really upsetting was that my animals never had any abilities! WHY? For one, I loved having the bear with me because I felt like a pet owner. But it upset me when I went to his skill page and it was always blank. A simple Roar to scare all the enemies away would have been nice!
And as I continued on my journey, I came across a Colosseum. I walked into the Colosseum, paid a man 1,000 coins to enter the tournament and was super excited to win some great prizes. Little did I know that the enemies were going to super tough on Round 1! Luckily enough, I was able to pass Round 1 but when Round 2 came around, I was instantly killed. Below you can watch me die! Please do laugh at me, I was not expecting it.
It may seem like I am bashing this game, but I am not. Like I said before, this game put me back in time to the good ol Final Fantasy days, and the fact that I was able to acquire animals to fight by my side, made me love this game even more. If I had to rate this game, I could easily give it an 8 out of 10 stars. I was very impressed with the story line, the quests, my party members, and my awesome abilities. If there was anything that could be changed, it would be the addition of a mini map and the addition of skills on animals. Other than that, Aldorlea created an amazing game!
