The Semi-Conscious Games We All Play
Here I was thinking I was the only one who played these kind of games. Staring out my car window, imagining someone skating alongside the car. Hopping over every pothole and grinding every rail – that was my variant, at least. Not stepping on the cracks of the street or sidewalk, balancing on a beam(which I actually did this morning) imaginary bike slaloms and walking on a single row of bricks are all games that I've played growing up and I'm sure you have too. I even played a game where I'd poke my finger through a tissue paper and stick my hand out the car window – like a superhero with a cape.
The odd thing is nobody knows where they learned it from. Nobody told me about the skater on the side of my car or the imaginary fire pits along the sides of the street. I, like everyone else, just assumed I came up with it myself. When we're on a long road trip or taking a long walk, we tend to "gamify" our activities. Adding a few rules here and there to make it a mundane activity somewhat interesting. Interestingly enough, we all play the same games and add the same rules.
