Fresh from the press, we just got news that Phil Harrison, former president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios and also head of Atari since 2008, will take the place of the iconic Peter Molyneux as head of the European branch of Microsoft Games Studios. Is Sony’s expertise coming to Microsoft? You betcha.
Reported by GamesIndustry International, the news was revealed yesterday, before Microsoft officially announced it. In response to the news, Phil Harrison said that he’s “excited to be joining the senior team at Microsoft at a pivotal time for our industry […] I am really impressed with the company's long-term vision for growing the market for interactive entertainment globally and also with the incredible wealth of talent, technology and resources the company has available to succeed."
Phil Spencer, current vice president of Microsoft Studios, commented that they “are honored to have Phil join a team that boasts a wealth of talent from across the industry […] Phil is one of video gaming's true visionaries, and his experience overseeing global studios and deep industry relationships make him the ideal person to lead our European efforts. Under his leadership, we look forward to continuing cultivating the best talent and growing our business in the region."
This is huge change in the gaming industry, and hopefully Phil Harrison will bring some positive changes to Microsoft’s vision, as well as maybe reviving Lionhead Studios, and restoring the former glory of Rare Ltd. Now Phil, I don’t mean to rush, but how about a new Banjo Kazooie now?
