Product Review: Razer BlackShark Battlefield 3 Collector Edition headset

Take warfare to the sky, with this Battlefield 3 pilot headset replica from Razer.

We received several days ago Razer’s latest headset, the Razer Blackshark Battlefield 3 Collector Edition headset, a helmet as you will understand done specifically in honor of Dice’s epic shooter.

Razer has a habit of making quality accessories for gamers whether it is mice, keyboards or headsets. It is also not the first accessory that we've tested from the manufacturer on our site. As you should probably remember the testing the Razer Naga Hex, the Razer BlackWidow Battlefield 3 Collector’s Edition Keyboard or even another pair of headphones, the Razer Star Wars: the Old Republic Gaming headset. So what about the Razer Blackshark? Do they sound as beautiful as they look?

With connections, it's pretty simple this time, because the Razer Blackshark headset plugs directly in a combined sound and microphone headphone jack or thanks to a splitter into each of the conventional input. Headphones are easy to plug with a cable long enough to move around.

Now what about the design and comfort? This is one of Razer’s headsets that stand out the most in its design, with a very aggressive look; it’s a refreshing new look especially that Razer’s headphones usually all look the same. A mixture of a retro headset through its cushions, and a helicopter helmet, you can’t get closer to a warrior feel with these.

Personally, I love the mixture of orange and black, as they go perfectly together, but also the mixture of leather on top of the helmet for excellent comfort when worn and the more simple materials such as plastic to reinforce the retro side of the helmet. It is a shame that there’s no other Razer logo on the earpieces, or any other distinctive brand on the headset, except the Battlefield 3 logo on the headstand, but I guess we can live with that.

The microphone is really original, its style is distinctive, very easy to move around, and makes you feels like an airplane pilot, with its boom microphone design. Also note that the microphone is completely detachable, a nice feature to wear the headset on the move, or to store safely.

Comfort wise, it’s excellent, as the helmet is light enough to be worn for hours, and sit nicely on the head, with the leather earpieces covering your ears completely, reducing the background noise. I’ll even dare say that they are the most comfortable headsets I’ve worn, even when compared to my Astro Gaming A40.

But what about the sound? Well, after several hours of listening to music, playing videogames with it on both consoles, PC and mobile devices, I came to one conclusion: it rocks! Sure, it’s no 7.1 Dolby Surround sound, but the stereo sound gives a nice crisp bass boost, and mid range level of treble. Which means for you non-audiophiles, enough power to feel the shot of an RPG on your helicopter, and the footsteps on a sneaky backstabber.

My only problem was that, although the headset is made for mobility too, it’s mostly a PC-based headset. Console users could use it via the headphone jack on the television sets, but that means no support for the microphone. Sure it works with mobile devices, thanks to the 3.5mm auxiliary jack, but would you walk around in the streets with the boom mic popping out?

Ultimately, for the price asked, it’s perfect, especially if you happen to be a crazy Battlefield 3 fan (who isn’t around here?), but when you can opt for a full on wireless gaming headset such as the Razer Chimaera 5.1, or even extend it to a true 7.1 surround sound with the Razer Tiamat 7.1, for only an extra $50, buying the Razer Blackshark Battlefield 3 Collector Edition headset is more about style and fan-appreciation. Still, if you’re on a short budget, the Razer Blackshark is your perfect PC gaming headset under the $150 price range.

Pros:
Comfortable on the head and ears.
Great retro design.
Neat audio quality and noice cancelation.

Cons:
You could opt for a better headset by adding only $50.
Not really made for console users.
No sign that it is a Razer headset anywhere.
