Gamescom 2012: Capcom Press Conference

Live from e-Werk Cologne, we give you the latest information from the Japanese firm.

by The At7addak Team on Aug 14, 2012

Our first day of Gamescom starts off with Capcom, as we head to the E-Werk gallery in Cologne.  Alex Jones comes in, and starts by saying that DMC will have one new character featured in the game. Dante meets his twin brother called Virgil, in an effort to fight the demons. The new trailer shows off a lot of more of action than what we expected, with the help of Kat.

Dante’s brother uses a Samurai sword. Previously found in the other Devil May Cry, he recruits Dante into the Order for revenge, but they were strange to each other since they were kids. Capcom’s own shows us a new gameplay demo, where the place is more modern, in a city, with less fantastic elements, but more of real life elements such as TV shows in the game, and reality TV programs that are actual missions.

Massive boss battles are back of course, but they are very different from those we know. In the demo, Dante will fight against a demon boss that is made of different tv screens, because in reality he’s a TV News Anchorman. He keeps on bashing the face, and then between each strong shot through the eye, he will be projected in a sort of TV News Report where he will fend off attacks from minions of the Demon world. This is also in illusion to corruption, and media playing with news as part of a grand plan.

Next stop was a trip to EDN-3, with Lost Planet 3 and a brand new trailer. If you remember Lost Planet, the game was massively acclaimed, but technical bugs were the reason why the game didn’t quite succeed in the western world.

With Lost Planet 3, Capcom is working hard to add the Hollywood effect and feel of the western world, to make the game look more like a version of Dead Space 3. The story is simple by base, which is Jim’s mission in EDN 3, to help colonizing the planet.

After showing the trailer, live gameplay is showed off. The main character is seen as working hard in colonizing EDN-3, with contracts to make more money to send to his family. He’s being sent by his team on a dangerous mission, with new alien characters and enemies. Jim needs to reach the heart of the nest, and he’s been attacked by a sort of giant wasp, which he will have to use QTE to fend off melee attacks from the aliens, with different ways other than pressing certain buttons, but with also having to aim where to hit your shots and punches.

The game has a lot of known features from third person shooters, such as covering system; fire from cover, and off course powerful weapons such as machine guns and shotguns. As Jim reaches the top of the mountains, he finds his task, which is repairing the relay tower.

Sadly the relay tower has been sabotaged by a person, which means there’s more danger on this planet than aliens. After repairing the tower, he will have to turn on the communication dish, by turning some racks, and then calls of his Rig to escape the area as a giant scorpion-like creatures (called the Spinner), which needs to be pushed back.

Now that the rig was sent to your location, you can now fully take on the spinner. As you remember, the Rig is a giant machine, which you can control to squash small enemies and can also melee attack, drill and grab the Spinner.

Next stop is now the Street Fighter X Tekken Vita version. We are a month away from the launch of this cross-platform, but it’s not a mere port, but a full on new game. 55 fighters, all unlocked and ready, a beginner friendly mode with the touch screens, more gems to collect, and DLC as well as network battles can be shared with your Playstation 3. Think about it as the second round of this massive fighting game.

On the other hand, Street Fighter’s 25th Anniversary will be full-on e-Sports, with a massive tournament all around the world. To celebrate the event, Yoshinori Ono steps in the room dressed up as sort of fighting chicken with a birthday cake in his hand.

Capcom’s European Marketing Manager Mickey Torode comes to introduce the new feature of Resident Evil 6, which is ResidentEvil.Net. A sort of ZombieLog for the game, you will see all your statistics, and your friends gameplay process, from the mercenary mode, as well as special events every week, where you can get points to unlock new DLCs and extra parts of the game. And yes as you would expect, ResidentEvil.Net will work with all sorts of social media sites, as well as upcoming mobile apps. The network will be available at launch of the game.

Jake and Cherry, new Resident Evil 6 are introduced now with an all-new gameplay video. They are trapped by a blizzard in a lost shack, waiting for the storm to drift off so they can get to their Rendezvous. As they discuss their past, they are attacked by a group of soldiers, and they will fight their way through the crowd.

Sadly they are not human, but are infected, and transform into a creature with giant scarab mandible from their head. The action is really fast, even faster than the previous Resident Evil 5, with takedowns, and melee attacks. As our two heroes get rid of their attackers, an avalanche starts, and both Jake and Cherry need to escape the mountain on Skidoos.

John McMorris is now on stage to introduce Remember Me. Capcom’s brand new IP, with a very interesting futuristic setting, and where memories are the center of attention of the game.

Memories are a sort of currency now in a futuristic Paris, as they can be bought and sold as you wish, through a company called MemoriZe. Nilin is an elite memory hunter, where she can attack and steal your brain’s biggest secrets, in hope of getting her own memory back. The gameplay starts with a new mission, where the action starts from the beginning, with a helicopter hunting you down. Nilin has Parisian Parkour skills, and rushes to a safe spot from building to building.

She uses a sort of beaming device that can control machines, to close and open doors as you wish, as well as using it for hand-to-hand combat, shooting sort of needle bullets and performing a takedown on enemies, which erase their entire mind.

Gamescom-2012-Capcom-Press-Conference-15.jpg

Some special moves can also freeze time itself (Memory Remix), to be able to either escape or get rid of enemies or perform slick takedown in slow motion. At some point in the gameplay video, she is forced to use stealth to get on higher ground of a building and jumps on the attacking helicopter to take down its user. This game is a weird mixture of Inception, Mirror’s Edge and hint of Assassin’s Creed’s movements.

Capcom seems to be taking a lot of risk to launch a new IP, one that has nothing to do with any of their previous titles. We shall be seeing hopefully more of this game in the following week.
