Gamescom 2012: Star Wars 1313

Is this how next-generation graphic will look like?

Revealed back at the E3 Expo this year, and now live in front of my eyes, one thing is obvious: Star Wars 1313 is a next-gen game. Although Lucas Arts’ own producer, Craig Derrick insisted on the fact that Star Wars 1313 uses the same techniques developed for their own films, you can tell that this is not something that will run on our current generation of consoles.

The title of the game itself, Star Wars 1313, is a reference to a lower level of the planet Coruscant in which most of the action will happen. For your non-Star Wars freak, Coruscant is one of the best known planets of the Star Wars universe, the true center of the galaxy entirely covered by the gigantic city, but even its 5000 levels, dug deep into the soil of the planet, providing space for all of the planet’s residents.

Like a perfect utopia, the wealthiest live on the surface, but the more you sink to lower level, the more you enter into a life much darker, where crime rules, a sort of prison. Level 1313 might not be the deepest in the world, but it is the most gruesome and dangerous of them all, and it is you, a Bounty Hunter that will explore its secrets.

For this demo, the developers have replaced the hero by another dummy character, because they are currently working on the actual protagonist, and want to preserve its real identity. Funny enough, if no one told us that, you would actually think the test character is the actual hero, because of the hard work done on him, but as of now, I have a pretty wild idea of who the real protagonist will be: Boba Fett.

The demo was mind blowing, especially thanks to the small data level mark on the side of the screen, showing more than 30 frames per second being rendered on the spot. The result of course is stunning, adding the fact that the machine rendering this demo is a sort of super powered Nvida PC, I’m getting quite worried. Why? Because I’m not sure we can find this current technology on the market at the time being.

Star Wars 1313’s developers have also chosen to focus on a more mature side of the epic franchise, telling the tale of dark lowlands criminals of the Star Wars universe. There will be no battle between good and evil as we are used to, there will be no Jedis or Force-related mysteries, but the action and the many nuances of morality that we can find among the bounty hunters, criminals and the Coruscant scum. In the demo, we discovered two characters, including the faux-hero, and his mentor, a cocky bounty hunter that is carrying a live and very dangerous bounty to 1313.

Obviously, things don’t go as planned, and as their ship goes down to 1313, the trip ends soon as they are attacked by another flying machine, apparently under the orders of a mysterious and powerful Droid. The action is quite spectacular, mixing platform sequence from Uncharted, and the strategic RPG shooting GST. There’s no real cutscenes, because Lucas Arts’ designers have managed to implement storytelling into the action, for a more fluid game.

Although Activision and Lucas Arts are quite discreet about the game, this presumably Next-Gen title looks like the kind of game that does nothing wrong: future quality, immersive motion capture of the actors and of course the impeccably transcribed Star Wars universe. This is surely one of the great sensations of this year, as well as a title to follow very closely.
